This record of events was established in 2005 when our three person family was residing cozily in a downtown Tokyo studio. We have since grown to five members and after many wonderful years in the suburbs of Chicago, we've returned to Tokyo. My husband and I both work full time; my name is Jamie and I'm the author of this blog!

Jamie, I read most of the article and intend to go back to finish. Wow, I don't think I have ever heard of this! Prayer. . .yes! a lot of prayer.
I actually did read it all before I saw your post. Very sad, and yes, Japan needs our prayers.
This is astounding. I read the whole thing and kept wondering, with my very American sensibility, "How can this happen? How can the parents put up with it? Why don't they boot their butts out the door or send them to counseling?" They're all clearly depressed.
But by the article's end I understood more about the cultural influences and how parents (and the hikikomori) find themselves trapped in this before they know it.
